I'm retired too.
I used to enjoy the intellectual challenge of breaking the software and the odd few hours of playing with the hardware when it was working and on odd occasions, pushing the boundaries of what was possible. It was mostly fun.

Its bad enough watching the first few Richard Greene Robin Hood episodes that were 'rescued' from film shown on USA TV.
The ads are still there. Yuck.
They were not in the original UK versions.

Re: Cryptocurrency
I don't think "intrinsic value" matters. e.g. Scottish banknotes are not legal tender anywhere in the world, not even is Scotland, they still seam to work OK. Actually, that changed a few years ago when the the wording on the notes changed. All that matters is what can you exchange somethi...

Watch some of the video of the Apollo astronauts using a few feet of ladder on the moon.
It looked really awkward.

Yep, if you want to go faster than 2400 baud with a baseband modem over POTS you have to get better than one bit per baud.
I still have a couple of real serial port modems.

Re: How do you manage your ~/Downloads folder?
There is another option. Grow the LV containing downloads.
My ~/downloads is considered expendable. Its abandoned with the PC it lives on at the end of life of the equipment but I have had to resurrect old drives to rake about once or twice.
Anything I can't download again gets saved elsewhere.

Re: How many different symbols are in a binary number? (not two)
... I know another interesting and practical approach - mapping logical values to a set of frequencies, for example, 440Hz means "0", 1250Hz -> "1", and 900Hz is a subtone which means the sender is alive. It's like adding the second dimension, and this second dimension is our 3r...

Correct.
Causality is described by relativity. There is even a school of thought that says that time is an illusion. That page might be behind a paywall.

I had forgotten about good old MIL-STD 1553. Even better.
The data is encoded in the transitions between two states, not the states themselves.
Time is still required to separate the transitions but its not a symbol itself.

The complete works of Isaac Asimov. All the O'Henry short stories, they always have a wonderful twist at the end. Edgar Allen Poe ... maybe a bit dark. The collected columns of Martin Gardner from Scientific American, There are 3 or 4 books. The increasingly inaccurately named Hitchhikers Guide to t...

Re: How many different symbols are in a binary number? (not two)
I'll have a gentle nibble at the two symbols. Time can be a separator. Either by agreeing the symbol rate in some standard or by recovering the symbol rate from the data transitions that are present, optionally by transmitting a synchronisation message from time to time. Its only time that stops eve...
