Do the youth come out as gay anymore?

Post by cokey »

Is it just me or does It seem as if a man/woman realises they are attracted to their own sex the fashionable thing is to 'come out' as transgender instead of gay?

I ask this because the gay community seems to be getting older and I'm worried that this non-binary trans fad will lead to a generation of incredibly confused people who will end up taking the support that real transgender people need

Kids still come out as gay... and, while less common, kids still get kicked out of their houses and/or disowned for being gay.

a lot of baby gays are being forced down the trans path though, even when they didn't ask for it.

It's particularly common among butch* lesbians to have school counselors and other mental health professionals encourage kids to go down the path in the name of "helping," just because of some kid's tendency to display typical gender role traits (you might have a butch girl that wears jeans and tees, is really into cars and is taking auto shop or welding in vocational school (here in NY, the non-college track kids are typically sent to a vocational school for part of their day), likes really femme girls, and plays guitar or drums in a band). Even though they never ask for it, the kids assume that the adults are the professionals, and just go along, only realizing down the road that they never wanted to be the other gender, they're just not a 1950s stereotype.

The trans fad right now is kinda like the bi fad was 20 years ago... only this time, half of the non-trans kids are pretending to be trans, while half of them never considered it but had it pushed on them (instead of almost all the kids pretending to be bi, but only dating straight).

* femme girls aren't pushed down the trans path by "professionals" because we meet all of society's gender role expectations, we just happen to like other women... which, in turn, often makes us sexualized by straight men who want the fantasy of having two girls at one time. "Lesbian" porn is nearly always two (or more) feminine women that are forced to enjoy each other by the virtue that there is no man around and our insatiable need for sex at all times, only for them suddenly to abandon their interest in each other as soon as a penis shows up. Few of these performers are actually lesbians and, ultimately, it just encourages men to try to pick up lesbians because they think we can be cured with the power of their penis. I don't know if it bothers me more when men won't leave me alone in person or when I see men on the dating apps, since they just end up driving the actual lesbians away. Surprise, but we don't want unsolicited pics of your penis and we don't even want to see you in our feeds. /rant

and as an aside, gay boys are less likely to get unwillingly pushed down the trans road because of the stigma of women being lesser than men, though very femme, flamboyant boys are somewhat more likely than more macho gay boys are.

One more thought on this specifically... it can still be incredibly difficult to come out as homosexual in some communities, but it is far more accepted than it was 20+ years ago.

A big part of why an LGBT community exists, is because we were often literally criminalized in many places. Here's a piece about the government clamping down on gay bars which also references this series of articles run in the local newspaper. I find it someone ironic that the head of the "Morals Squad" of the local police force in 1964 was a woman (you know, doin' a man's job)...

But also add in how gays were viewed during the AIDS crisis, as complete pariahs. Many gay men were dying of the disease and few straights wanted to do much to help, so lesbians stepped up to take care of them instead.

You also have the history of lavender marriages, where a gay man and lesbian woman would marry each other as a form of social protection, so they could live every day lives, get promotions, etc.

Throw in not being able to marry each other, not being allowed to adopt, etc, and communities formed out of necessity - both as a way of meeting other people, but also as a way to advocate for changes to the law.

Thankfully, a lot of that is gone today... and without the need for community, the community itself has waned. Older gays/lesbians have gone on to live their lives (not to mention many have died off due to old age or AIDS) and younger people don't know the struggles that we faced just a decade or two ago. The downside of the lack of community, is that if you're older than college age and not already partnered, it can be incredibly difficult to find people unless you're just looking for casual sex... and, without a community to advocate on our behalf, the very real problem of elevated levels of mental health issues silently continues to plague the entire LGBT population, while we're more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety, self-harm, suicidal ideation, and other issues compared to the straights.

One more thought on limited resources...

Some professionals just think they're doing good and don't want to hinder people, so they err on the side of pushing people for something they didn't ask for...

Likewise, from a cynical perspective, more demand is proof that "more resources are needed," creating career demand for the professionals involved. After all, "no good parent wants to stand in the way of their child," and whether it is the parent, the government, or an insurance company paying, the professionals are making bank.

There was an explosion in doctors performing surgeries on trans people here in the US after the rules were changed to allow the government to pay for it and the government also mandating that private companies have to pay for it too. I don't doubt there was a lot of demand, an inability to pay and not enough surgeons before, but there are a lot of medical hacks out there just looking to make a buck off people, whom are ultimately just causing harm.
