Trackball advice needed

Post by antae »

:?: Any trackball users here :?:
I'm going to buy a trackball, but not sure which one.
Well, I'm sure it must not be a ball for a thumb finger :geek:
These devices I find interesting:
 Elecom DEFT
 Elecom HUGE
 Kensington Expert Mouse

Unfortunately, Elecom is Japan, and delivery has a cosmic price :?

I use a Logitech M570, which IS a thumb trackball, but I keep mine elevated at a 45 degree angle, making it more like a handshake grip.

I have 4 of them, for various computers, and I did have one that ran into the double click issue, and another where I wore out the ball. The site complains about the "cheapo scroll wheel," but I like the feeling of the detents as I'm scrolling.

I first bought one when touchpads stopped having manual buttons on them (I freakin' hate gestures, particularly on touchpads, since half the time, they don't do what I want. Why anyone thought that replacing physical buttons with gestures is a good thing... well, I guess they're the same UI/UX designers that thought burying vehicle controls in touch screens and making Firefox and other applications useless was a good idea) and liked it enough that I replaced the mouse on my other computers with one.

I don't know which one is better, only here to say that sometimes a trackball might not be enough (nor a vertical mouse either https://duckduckgo.com/?q=vertical+mouse&ia=web ).

My solution was to move the mouse from the right-hand to the left-hand. It seemed awkward at first, but in a couple of days it became the new normal. Didn't swapped the mouse buttons, so to keep backwards compatibility with the normal right-handed mouse settings.

The thread spurred me to look into trackball mice and the Orbit with a scroll ring looked enticing. It doesn't seem to have a third mouse button, the scroll wheel "middle click", how do you get around it? GNOME's help claims that you can click both left and right mouse buttons simultaneously to middle click but it doesn't seem to work with my mouse when I try it (it does have a scroll wheel button though).
