Just like I didn't expect the Jen Tooth forums to actually nuke OTW, I didn't expect you guys to actually go through with it and create your own phpBB forum. Who's bankrolling it? :D

Either way, I'm back, good to see you all again.

That would be the FBI. We sell them the names of the people we suspect are Trump supporters so they can be hunted down and fed to antifa

Why thank you!

And video chats? I might consider it next time I notice an announcement but I already have to sit through plenty of Zoom video chats over the week so I don't know whether I'd feel like sitting through another one voluntarily. The New Normal™

Definitely try to say hello, even if it's just for a couple of minutes.

Meetings tend to be Saturdays/Sundays 6pm GMT/12pm Eastern/10am Pacific. Tbh, we're all easy with the times though, as long as you don't like pineapple on pizza

Well they (council and more) chased desultory away...

I didn't realize that desultory was affected.

I'm starting to let my conspiritard take over and believe that some entity wants gentoo destroyed (at least as it exists today) and that some of the key "devs" have been "enlisted" for that purpose. It's the only thing (to me) that makes sense with all the "actions" the council has taken.

There are too few devs to make a difference. Gentoo needs to be re-shaped and streamlined and made more user orientated because at the moment the developers seem to just be developing for themselves.
  • Replace the trustees with non-gentoo personnel from the open source community (i.e. Ubuntu, Fedora, Google, SuSE devs) and have their job only to oversee the council when there is a problem
  • Replace the current council with a diverse group made up of 5 devs, 3 ex-devs and 3 members of the community and Daniel Robbins. If any vote is tied the drobbins has the final say.
  • Make 5 and 10 year plans for the future of Gentoo
  • Get new devs, users and corporate sponsors

It would be easier to dismiss this more outlandish theory if it wasn't for the fact that no else than Lennart Poettering has been personally swiping at the Gentoo project for years - that is not the behaviour of someone who sees a project as benign and/or not a threat to their plans.

And then you remember that RMS was cancelled by a campaign enabled by an IBM employee...

What what what what? I thought Gentoo was anti-Poettering and systemd.

I'd starting to think that Gentoo behind the scenes is like some Minecraft-furry version of Eyes Wide Shut

Not really... There are some annoyingly vocal pro systemd, members of the church of pottering such that nothing bad can ever be uttered otherwise vitriol will be thrown back and your stance, however technically accurate, is dismissed "because you are anti-systemd"

There are those that just want to get on... Be it with systemd, openrc, s6 ... KDE, gnome, awesomewm and as long as they can do what they want they want to be able todo it

I recently had to edit the pipewire wiki page (that I started) because someone went in and put a massive red WARNING that a non-desktop profile on Gentoo (or non-systemd) might not be supported, all because I added options for

1) systemd (yes I added what was needed)
2) openrc with elogind + Pam
3) openrc with other means (is manage XDG)

What what what what? I thought Gentoo was anti-Poettering
williamh, mgorny, rich0, asturm, floppym, et al are all systemd proponents...

A handful of us Gentoo USERS (and a couple devs) have stood up in the face of systemd and friends, or else I believe Gentoo would have gone completely systemd. williamh has done everything in his power to try to force systemd on us by also trying to break openrc, he lied to the Council to get them to issue an edict to try to cripple openrc, etc.

Poettering whines about Gentoo because, outside of Devuan and Slackware, it's the one distro that didn't totally cave. But look at the Debian split and you'll basically see the same game has been being played in Gentoo for about 7 years now... only there was more opposition here (probably because Gentoo users are largely more capable of fixing things themselves. I mean, how many of us have our own personal overlays?).

Look at the Council, ComRel, FreeDesktop, QA, and systemd projects and tell me you don't see some familiar names, including names that were advocating the hardest to close down OTW. Go look at just about any thread that discusses the merits, bugs, quirks, of systemd and you'll find the same names vehemently defending it and attacking users. The goal is to silence dissent and drive away the opposition...

asturm is technically not a proponent as he has posted a few times that he uses OpenRC with KDE... that said I wouldn't call him a strong pusher against systemd influence in Gentoo.
